holy cow, hopdoddy

hop doddy, Hop Doddy, burger, Austin, TX, South Congress

Deriving its name from beer (hop) and a Scottish word for cow (doddy), Hopdoddy fits right in with the South Congress flair.

After hearing accolades about this new burger bar, we knew it would be the perfect place to check out with friends visiting from out of town over New Year’s. We did a drive-by on Saturday night and, holy cow, hopdoddy was poppin’. With a glass storefront, the interior is visible from the street. On Saturday night the place was packed.  On Sunday night we returned for dinner and the Rams @ Seahawks game, same story.  I expected a long wait, but the line moves quickly.  Not only is the service prompt, attentive, and friendly, but the food is excellent as well.

Atmosphere: The interior is trendy and modern, but still “Austin” with boxes of local tomatoes along the wall passing as decor. The crowd is relaxed and the servers are super friendly (who wouldn’t want to wear a shirt to work that says, “We spank our patties and they like it”?).

Price: The price was right for an upper-scale bar with quality products.

Beer: Hopdoddy offers a variety of craft beer, all of which I wouldn’t mind trying. We ordered a few different brews and the waiter was more than happy to let us try samples. For $4-$5, the beer is served in a very generous sized, frosted glass.

Food: Our party ordered the Magic Shroom, Goodnight (plus bacon), Janis Joplin, and Ahi Tuna Burger. Forget the burger, just give me the bread! Those house-baked, butter-glistened, slightly toasted buns got my taste buds going. Hopdoddy serves burgers that cater to meat lovers and vegetarians alike with toppings that range from apple-smoked bacon to pickled ginger. Their ingredients are local and everything is made in-house (they grind their own meat, bake their own bread, cut their own fries, churn their own ice cream).

I have nothing bad to say about this place! Great company, great atmosphere, great service, and great BUNS!
