Peachy Keen

January 8, 2011

About 4 weeks before the new year, my husband and I started to discuss our 2011 travel plans.  Austin, Texas, has been one of those cities on the top of our list.  We decided to make it our first destination of the year and take advantage of Austin’s warmer weather during the colder winter months of St. Louis.  On New Year’s Eve we landed in Austin and decided to celebrate on the very popular and trendy 6th street.  We came upon several of Austin’s food trucks, trailers and carts, but the one we had to try was the peached tortilla (tpt) and I have been craving it ever since.

Let’s just say, I’d be happy to “get peached” any day of the week. We found the truck parked behind the modern-sleek Star Bar off West 6th street. We were able to enjoy our meal on the patio at the Star Bar thanks to the awesome relationship that tpt has developed with them. Between my husband and I, we ordered the bbq brisket taco, the crab cake slider, banh mi slider and of course the banana-nutella wonton dessert. The crab cake slider is a new addition to the peached tortilla, but it is on the top of my list!

The breakdown:

Never have I had bbq brisket so tender, juicy and flavorful. The meat just falls apart. And to top it off, tpt uses a creamy slaw and smoky peach bbq sauce to fuse the flavors in a corn tortilla (also in a slider if you prefer).

But that is just the beginning, the banh mi slider is one that makes tpt so popular – a popularity that it deserves.  The combination of sriracha mayo with Vietnamese braised pork belly and pickled daikon and carrot salad on a sweet Hawaiian roll is to die for.

My all-time favorite – the crab cake slider.  Just imagine a perfectly fried crab cake with a creamy slaw (it has apples in it!) and that delicious sriracha mayo. I am the first to admit that I was nervous when I heard “sriracha”, I am usually a little bit timid when it comes to hot sauce, but the famous slaw mellows the heat and makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

To finish off the perfect meal, we salivated over the banana-nutella wonton bites that were smothered in a sweet cream sauce.

I highly recommend gettn’ peached and experiencing all the textures and flavors that this truck has to offer. Not only was the food delectable, but the service was fast and friendly.   We miss you, peached tortilla!!!

DO NOT WAIT for this truck to come by your house or place of employment – go forth and seek it!  Follow them @peachedtortilla on Twitter and check out the truck menu and schedule here.
