Cafe Manhattan

February 27, 2011

I have passed Cafe Manhattan many times while driving on Hanley road.  It is easy to miss this small corner diner in Clayton.  About a year ago, I met my husband there on his lunch hour.  When he first mentioned Cafe Manhattan, I had no idea what he was talking about.  A diner near Hanley and Wydown?  Never seen it.

The atmosphere is fun and casual, a typical 50’s-style diner, full of authentic memorabilia from Coca-Cola with classic soda fountain decor on the walls.  The menu is quite large, and they offer a wide variety of options for all appetites at reasonable prices.  Of course they offer milkshakes at the counter (and at your table) – an all important diner food, but they also have St. Louis style pizza, pasta, salad, soups, sandwiches, burgers, and fries.

On our first visit, besides the atmosphere, all I remember is the toasted ravioli. (TOASTED RAVIOLI is on my top ten favorite foods list – see FOOD TALK).  I was not about to pass up the opportunity to order them on this visit!  A few minutes after we placed our order, we were enjoying these meat-filled, crispy ravioli.  Yummy!

Our main course was out shortly after we devoured our ravioli.  Trevor ordered a pepperoni pizza (his favorite food), and I had the cannelloni.  Both of us agree that our entrees were of average diner quality – hearty and filling, but nothing to write home about. However, the quick service, pleasant atmosphere, and the toasted ravioli are what makes me want to return.  Plus I hear the desserts are fantastic.  Cafe Manhattan is a great place to take the family for dinner or for a quick lunch on a work day.

If you’re in St. Louis, you should stop in Cafe Manhattan just for the atmosphere. They have some neat memorabilia, and it really does feel like you’ve stepped back into the 50s!
